Starting out as a freelancer in whatever your field of expertise can be a daunting task. Promoting yourself effectively will help you to show the world your skills and talents and to ultimately gather a healthy client list.

The following are some ways of promoting yourself as a freelancer.

  • Build a website. This is probably the most basic and yet most effective promotional tool out there. If you know some basic web design techniques it can also be incredibly cost effective. On the website you can provide potential clients with information about your education and experience. If needed, it is also a great place to display an online portfolio.
  • Engage in discussion forums. There are lots of forums out there where people are asking questions hoping that someone who knows what they are talking about will post an answer. This is a perfect way to display your knowledge to people and to direct potential traffic to your website if you put you sites address in your discussion board signature.
  • Utilize social networking sites. Doing this is a massive advantage as it’s free, and there are over 500 million registered users on Facebook alone! You can create a page dedicated solely to your freelancing business of which people can like. This way when you post updates they will be informed automatically. You can also put a link to your website. It’s almost like an electronic form of word-of-mouth.

Getting started as a freelancer can be a bit of an uphill battle sometimes. However if you take advantage of the internet to market and promote yourself it will make it a bit easier.
